West Seattle Golf Course
4470 35th SW
Seattle, WA 98126
Situated only minutes from downtown, West Seattle Golf Course is an entertaining 18 holes that offers some great rounds and views for any type of golfer. Although the final five holes of the course are considered the most tedious in the area, the rest of the course does not disappoint.
Based on a hillside, you are playing the front nine on an up and down hill on the top of the course. The first hole presents a straight par 5 that shoots over a drop in elevation before you pick up the cut. A wide fairway and forgiving slice area are to be expected here. However, if you are one to hook it, you may find some measurable trouble.
There is some interesting terrain on this course. The par 3's are a joy to play and several par 4's really do bring into question the clubs in your bag. Notable par 4's include the 2nd and 4th holes. Both very fun to play.
Hole 11 is the signature hole. You tee off looking directly at the downtown core through a beautiful spread of trees. Your shot is one to a fairway situated just before a huge downslope on your second shot. This par 5 wonder will have you guessing on what club will best place you onto the elevated green.
Conditions at West Seattle are usually quite lush. Recently Seattle has experienced some dry summer conditions, yet West Seattle has managed to stay in practically perfect condition. The city managed course has the great grounds keepers to thank for this.
The staff at West Seattle is quite friendly. During peak months you will be greeted at the first tee by a marshall that keeps the groups moving. Don't hesitate to ask yardage and green conditions as the marshall is quite knowledgable.
The two downsides to West Seattle Golf Course are the lack of a driving range, and the final five holes of the course. Without a warm up at a range you may find this course to be a hard learned warm up in itself. As for the final five holes, rumour has it that the designer of the course died before finishing the layout. Therefore, the course owners simply ran the last five holes back and forth up and down a hill to fill the space. In any case, they are some of the most boring holes in golf, and quite a workout.
All in all though, West Seattle is a great value and a close game to the city. You really should give it a round.
